I walked the long way, because I always do, out past the canal and back up through the Northern Quarter, and it never once lost me. Every time I stopped, it stopped and looked back as if to ask whether we were nearly there. By the time we reached my door the pavement was wet from the drizzle, and I could see its prints stamped behind us, two by two, going on and off the light of the lamps. It put me in mind of that loop Mum used to draw on the back of her shopping lists, the one you said was a sideways eight and I said was a road that never ends.

I've called him Mungo, which the vet says is fine, and I've had him a week now. He sleeps across my feet and waits at the bottom of the stairs when I come in, tail going like a metronome. Last night I found a poster in the chippy window asking after a dog answering to Rufus, and I stood there with the chips going cold, deciding. I haven't taken it down yet. Come and see him at Easter, and bring that tin of shortbread with the Scottie dogs on the lid, and we'll walk the loop together.
