Black script tattoo of the word family woven through an infinity symbol on the inner forearm.

Infinity symbol with family script on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the word family in a flowing cursive script, with the loops of an infinity symbol running through and around the lettering. The linework is smooth, even and solid black, with no shading. The skin looks glossy and slightly flushed, and the plain dark background keeps the focus on the design.

Dear Nell,

The lighthouse keeper at Skerrow Point has taken to counting the gulls again, which means the weather is turning and the post boat will be late. I am writing this at the galley table with the lamp swinging above me, so forgive the smudges. Your last letter came off the Thursday boat with the corner torn, and I read it twice before the kettle boiled. You say Mam has stopped going down to the harbour in the evenings. Tell her I will be home before the herring run, whatever the ship's master says about our cargo.

The captain has promised we make Lerwick by the month's end, and the coal is holding out better than he feared. I have been thinking about the figure-of-eight the bosun drew on my arm last port, the one that loops back on itself so you cannot find where it starts. He wrote our name through the middle of it in the copperplate he learned from the chaplain. Mine was the first word on the page, and yours was the last. He said the loop was so none of us could ever be lost from the others, however far the tides carried us.

I will not pretend I was not stung at the time, but I see the sense of it now. Every time I wash my arm I am reminded that the ink does not come off, and I find I am glad of it. Give the baby my love, and tell Mam the ink is nearly dry on this page, so she must forgive me if the words run.

Your brother, Tom
