Family script inside a heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the word family written in cursive script, with the letters flowing into a single continuous outline of a heart. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. It sits on the inner wrist, photographed close up with a warm, slightly faded tone and a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mule came down the Kessan track on the third morning of snow, its girth cut through and a sack of letters lashed to its back with baling wire. My brother Tomas found it first, sitting in the drift at the bend where the path forks for the old hut. Tomas read the envelopes aloud, which he should not have done.

Most were for the valley. One was addressed to us in a looping hand that never lifted from the paper, so the letters seemed to run together like a rope pulled tight. Inside was a single sheet, folded twice, and the same word written over and over down the page: family, family, family, each one joined to the next by a stroke that curved back on itself. Mama said it was the sort of writing a person does when they cannot decide what to say, so they say the one thing many times.

We walked the mule back up to the hut in the blue light before dusk, Tomas leading and me holding the sack. Nobody had signed the letter. The postmark was smudged past reading. We kept it in the tin with the matches, and every winter after, when the pass closed and the lamps burned low, Father would take it out, trace the curve with one blunt finger, and say nothing at all.

The spring the thaw opened the road, a woman came up from the lowlands on foot with a satchel and a face I did not know. She looked at the tin for a long time, then took the sheet from my hands and turned it over. On the back, in the same unbroken line, was a heart drawn round a single name I had never heard. She folded it again and went back down the track without asking for anything, and I understood then that some letters are only ever half delivered.
