Family script inside a heart on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line heart outline wraps around the word family in cursive script, with the heart's lower point trailing into a small loop. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The design sits centred on the inner wrist against plain skin, with a dark background at the right edge.

Now sit down, the lot of you, and mind the sticky patch by the urn, because this is the hall where your great-grandad first trod on my foot. The Palais on Cross Street, nineteen fifty-three, and the band had a fiddler called Eli Marsh who never once lifted his bow from the string for a whole reel. People said he had no breath in him at all. He just kept going, one long line of tune, the way a child draws without taking the pencil off the paper.

So when the caller, Mr Tully, handed out the dance cards that winter, he gave each girl a stub of pencil and said draw me something you'll keep. Most drew hearts, which was no surprise. But Dorothy Pike drew a heart in one unbroken line, then wrote the word family inside it in her best joined-up hand, and the pencil never left the card. At the bottom point she let the line run on, looping round and round, until it came back to where it started.
Dorothy married the youngest of the Marsh brothers that spring, and she kept that card in her handbag for sixty years. When the hall was pulled down for flats, her daughter found it in a biscuit tin with the programmes. The loop at the bottom has a small blot where the pencil stopped, just once, to think. And you can only see the blot when you hold the card up to the light from the old side door, which is exactly where I'm standing now. So come and look, all of you. Come on.
