Fine line black script tattoo reading family inside an infinity loop, placed on the upper back near the neck.

Family script in an infinity loop on the upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the word family written in flowing cursive script, with the letters of the word looping through a large infinity symbol. The linework is thin, even and solid black, with no shading. It sits on smooth skin against a plain background, photographed from behind with the top of the subject's hair visible at the upper left.

Dear Pauline,

I have been meaning to write since the reunion, but the cardboard box of Year Nine photographs has sat on my hall table for a week, and every time I pick it up I find another face I can't name. Mr Hollis is still in the back row with his whistle, and you are still pretending you did not copy my French homework. I forgave you in 1987. I thought you should know that I checked the back of the photo to make sure.

You left before the raffle, and nobody told me why. Julie said you had a train. I saw your coat still on the peg by the bar, so I took it out to the car park, and that was when I found a paper napkin folded inside the pocket. Your handwriting has not changed. It loops and tangles the way it did on the Christmas cards you sent when we were sixteen, and this time you had drawn the word family in it, the letters running round a figure of eight, then round again, as if you had not been able to decide where it started.

I have kept the napkin in my purse. I am not sure what you meant by it, and I am writing to ask, not to tell you what I think. Come for tea in March. Bring the photographs if you still have yours, and I will bring the coat.

Love, Maggie
