Dear Ruth,

Forgive the ink on this sheet. The abbot has at last let me have the good pen with the cut nib, and I have been making a fool of myself with it. Brother Anselm says my letters lean too far forward and fall over each other, so I have spent three evenings on a single figure of eight in the margin of the psalter, trying to make the stroke run out from one loop and come back round to touch its own beginning without a join showing.

He is a patient man, which is more than I am. He sat beside me on Tuesday, took the pen out of my hand and drew the sign once, slowly, the way the old masters did. "It has no start," he said, "so it cannot be finished. You only have to keep going until you arrive where you were." I asked him whether that was a sermon. He said it was arithmetic, and that the monks have never been able to tell the two apart.

So I did as he showed me. I wrote faith along the top loop, because that is where the abbot's rule begins, and family along the bottom, because that is where the letters from home always end. Then I sat with my hands cold in my sleeves and found the line would not close. Anselm looked over my shoulder and laughed. "You have written the two words but not the crossing," he said. "The crossing is the part they leave out of the catalogue."

I have not worked out what he meant. I only know the bell rang for vespers while I was still trying, and I went down anyway, and when I came back the crossing had closed itself, the way a path does when you stop watching the ground. Write soon, and tell Mother the ink is improving.

Yours in haste, Thomas
