Infinity symbol with family script and red heart
Fine line · Neck · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows an infinity symbol with the word "family" written in cursive script across its right loop. A small solid red heart sits on the upper left of the left loop. The linework is thin and mostly black, with the infinity curve shaded more heavily on its lower edge, and the photo is taken straight on against plain skin.

Every boat out of Porthgwin had a man who tied the warps, and Tobias was the best of them. He tied a long splice that ran round itself like a figure laid on its side, two loops, one swallowing the other. He said a rope spliced that way could never be pulled apart, from the inside or the out. His wife Nan thought it a daft notion. She'd stitched a red wool heart onto his oilskin the winter before, and every morning she told him the sea wanted a reason to bring him home, and the heart was it.
The night the wind came round to the north-east, the Gannet was three miles out with the nets half-hauled and the mast lamp gone grey with spray. Tobias had a line fouled round the winch and a boy screaming in the bow. He never thought about his own neck. He thought about that loop, how it had no end to pull at, and he went over the side on it with the knife in his teeth. When they hauled him back, the rope was whole, the boy was holding the far end of it, and Tobias was laughing like a madman because he'd been right.
Nan sewed the word family along that splice herself the following spring, in black thread on the grey cloth, so anyone who looked would know whose knot it was. Nobody in Porthgwin ever asked why it ran in a loop. They knew. Now get off my stool, and tell that boy of yours the tide turns at six.
