Infinity symbol with feather, arrows and family script
Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A looped infinity symbol forms the main outline, with a feather running diagonally across it and two small arrowheads at the lower left. The word family is written in cursive script at the right-hand end of the loop. The linework is thin and mostly black, with soft green-teal shading in the feather, and the design sits centrally on a pale leg against a white background.

Frankie Mayhew had been told twice by the bandleader that the Pavilion closed at eleven, and twice she had ignored him, because the last waltz was still turning and her brother had not come back from the cloakroom. The band played "Harbour Lights" slow and sweet. Under the chandeliers the couples went round in the same loop they always did, and she could never tell whether the floor was turning them or they were turning the floor.

Teddy had a feather from the pantomime costume box stuck behind his ear, a grey-green thing with a dark quill. He had promised to return it. He had promised a lot of things since coming home from the army.
She found him at the cloakroom hatch, arguing with the attendant about a missing umbrella. "Come on," she said. "Mum's at the bus stop and she's already cross."
He grinned and pressed the feather into her hand. "Keep it. Pin it on your coat so you don't lose me again." She didn't laugh. She tucked it into the lapel of her good wool coat, and as they went out through the revolving doors the band struck up the final chorus and the whole hall swung round, every couple and every arrow of light from the ceiling, round and back and round again. Frankie thought of the word their father used to chalk on the pantry door for the three of them, and how it had never once looked like it was going to stop.
