Infinity symbol with hope on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black infinity symbol loops across the top of a foot, with the word hope written in flowing cursive script inside its central crossing. The linework is fine and even, with no shading or colour. The foot rests against a dark sandal strap, with sunlight and greenery blurred in the background.

The rain had been falling on the market at Harrowgate since the bells of the wool hall rang seven, and the stallholders had given up trying to keep their awnings dry. Old Mabel Fenn sold ribbon from a barrow under the church wall. She had one reel of black silk that no one had ever bought, because it was the colour of the wet cobbles and nobody wanted reminding of them.

A boy came down the lane one morning with a shilling in his fist and a sister who was ill in bed. He asked for the length of silk that would go round the world. Mabel laughed and said no length went round the world, the world was too round for it. He said his sister had told him the world had no end, so the silk must have none either. Mabel looked at him a long while, then cut a yard, knotted the ends together into a loop, and wrote a word across the crossing in ink.

The boy took it home. Hope, the word said, in her slanted hand. He tied it round his sister's wrist, and the rain went on for a fortnight, and the river came up over the bridge and into the lower yards.

When the water went down, the boy went back to the barrow. Mabel had gone. The silk reel sat on the wet stones, full to the brim, and every thread on it ran back into its first knot, as if no one had ever cut it at all.
