Infinity symbol with Love You More script
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the top of a foot forms an infinity symbol, with the words Love You More written in flowing cursive script along the upper loop. A small crescent moon sits at the lower right of the loop. The linework is thin and even, and the lettering is shown against pale skin on a teal surface.

No, sit closer, the lamp won't carry your face past the fourth row. Right. Where was I. The Halley relay had been dark eleven years when Mabel Okonedo-Wray climbed down the ladder at Tycho Forty with a spool of thread and a grudge. Her brother Tobiah had signed the transfer papers for the lunar ferry without telling her, and she had not spoken to him since the spring of the Lantern Strike.

Mind the next bit. The ferry's last crew left a crescent of brass stamped on the hatch, a little moon the size of a thumbnail, and every night Mabel traced it with her gloved finger while she waited for the signal to come back. Then she would wire a message down to the dust-blue world, the same message every time, and it would take nine hours to arrive and nine more for any answer. Love you more. She sent it as a joke at first, back when they were children arguing over the last of the peaches.
Tobiah never once wrote back the same words. He sent back Love you more, then Love you most, then a long run of numbers that turned out, when she finally decoded them, to be a sum of every peach they had ever split. Mabel laughed so hard at that she cried into her suit's collar, and the cold got in.
Here is the thing about loops, children. You can go round them forever and never be the one who stops. The day the relay came alive again, she found one last line waiting: Still you. She did not reply. She did not need to. She heard the answer come back to her through the wall, through the rock, the way a scratch goes round a record.
