Moon and back lettering on a foot
Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
A photograph of a foot showing black tattoo lettering that reads I love you to the moon and back, with the script I and a looped cursive love followed by a printed line running down toward the heel. A small crescent moon at the lower edge is shaded in blue with a lighter highlight. The ink is crisp against the skin, and the foot sits in a car with a blurred window behind it.

The ewe had been labouring since dusk, and by the time Dad's lamp swung round the barn door the frost had already furred the gate latch. Gran sent me out with a bucket and a flask of sweet tea and told me not to come back until the lamb was breathing. I didn't mind. The yard was quiet in the way only a farm in January can be, the Land Rover ticking as it cooled and the sky so clear it hurt to look up.

Dad was kneeling in the straw with his sleeves rolled past the elbow, talking to the ewe in the flat, patient voice he used for heifers and for my mother alike. The lamb came all at once, slick and grey, and he rubbed it with a fistful of hay until it sneezed. I stood in the doorway with the bucket going cold in my hands and watched the crescent moon slide out from behind the ash tree, thin as a paring knife and blue at the edges where the frost caught it.
Afterwards he walked me to the back step. Gran had always said the moon kept a tally of every creature born under it, and that she'd been checking the count since before Dad was out of short trousers. I asked him whether the moon was winning. He laughed and said it was a draw most years. Then he took a blue plastic tag from his coat pocket, the kind we clip to ears, and wrote a name on it in biro, pressing hard so it would survive the weather. I asked what it said. He handed it to me. It said Crescent, and under that, in smaller letters, the date.
