Infinity symbol with 'run' on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Colour · Photo
A pink fine line infinity symbol sits on the back of the neck, with the word run in cursive script beside its right loop. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is a single bright pink tone against lightly tanned skin. The hair is gathered to the side and a pink top is visible at the bottom right of the frame.

The path through Hollins orchard was not a circle, Dad always said. It was a figure of eight laid on its side, and you could run it all afternoon without once getting lost. Ruth had told him the ground under the Bramleys was too lumpy for any figure at all. She was fourteen that August and wanted to be somewhere with pavements by September.

The windfalls had started early that year. Wasps worked the split ones along the lower rows, and the grass between the trunks had gone the colour of old straw. She ran the top loop first, past the stile where the hedge gave out, then dropped down through the plum rows where the air smelt of sugar and turned fruit. Her brother sat on the upturned crate by the well, timing her on his phone and calling out splits as if it mattered.
At the crossing point, where the two loops met at the same gate she had left twenty minutes before, she stopped. The sky above the far hedge had gone a bruised pink, the colour of the cheap sweets Dad kept in the van. She understood then that the figure was never meant to be finished. You came back to the same gate, but the ground had changed under you: a rotten apple had gone soft, a branch had come down, and someone had cut the grass short where it had been long.
She didn't go on running. She walked the last loop slowly, picking up the bruised apples and setting them on the stone wall, one by one, until the crate was empty and her brother had stopped calling out the times.
