Fine line infinity symbol joined to the word love in cursive script on the wrist, rendered in pale, faded ink.

Infinity symbol and love script on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a wrist with a thin, single-line infinity symbol that flows into the word love written in joined script. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink appears pale or faded against the skin. The composition is centred on the tattoo, filling the frame horizontally.

Now sit still and mind the stove, because this part is about the seam and not about the men who dug it. Down at Carnhill they said the coal ran on forever, a single black ribbon bending under the hills like a loop of wire. Old Idris, who held the lamp for the overman, took a stub of chalk to the first timber prop he came to and drew the sideways eight, the one you see on the sweet papers, and beside it he wrote the word love in the slanting hand his mother taught him, because he had a girl up at the top in Tregarth and no nerve to say it aloud.

Every shift after that the lads found the mark a little fainter, rubbed by sleeves and shoulders and the wet of the air, and every shift Idris went back with his chalk and went over it. The overman told him the prop would be pulled for timber and he would have to stop wasting his breath. Idris said the wood would outlast them all, and that was the trouble with it, for when the timber was finally lifted and carried up into the daylight, the chalk had sunk into the grain so deep you could still read it on the cut end.

Idris married his girl when the seam was worked out, and he never went back down. Their grandson, who told me this, says the eight is still there in the back of the cupboard, the bit of prop with the curl of letters, pale as a winter moon. He says the loop never closes, and that is the whole point, you understand? You go round and round and it still goes on past where you thought the end would be.
