You will not believe what Mr Tolley did with the Raleigh on Tuesday. He wheeled it up Chapel Row with a sack of coal strapped to the rear rack and the bell going like a fire engine, and the whole queue outside the Co-op turned round to look. I told him he would have the chain off before the bridge. He said the chain had never once come off in twenty years, and that was more than could be said for Mrs Tolley.

I have been practising on the lane behind the gasworks, the way you showed me before you went south. Mother still thinks I am at choir. The first afternoon I fell into the nettles twice and tore my stocking, but by Friday I could get as far as the signpost at Hatherley without a wobble. I came back with the wind in my face and my hair come down, and nobody to tell me to sit up straight.

I have decided I will ride to the coast on the Saturday after next, if the weather holds. Forty miles, Mr Tolley says, with a hill at Ferring that would make a grown man walk. I have packed a cheese sandwich, a spare pair of plimsolls and the little pencil drawing you did of a bicycle on the back of a menu from the Regal, which I have pinned inside my cardigan like a secret.

Write me back care of the post office, and tell me if the sea is as grey as they say. If it is, I shall bring my own sun.
