Black line drawing of an infinity symbol with the words love and life written in looping script across it, shown on white paper.

Infinity symbol with love and life script

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A single continuous black line forms an infinity symbol, with the word love written in script on the left loop and life on the right loop, where the line crosses over itself. The strokes are of even weight with no shading, and the design is drawn in solid black on a plain white card placed on a textured brown fabric background.

Dear Tom, The kettle has boiled twice since I started this and I have let it go cold both times, because the pen keeps stopping at the same place. Mrs Halloran from the post office came by this morning with the parcel you asked for, and she looked at the tin of tacks on the table and then at me as if I had grown a second head. I told her they were for the church hall. They are for the back step, which has been loose since March, and I have been fixing it myself with your old hammer and a great deal of swearing you would not approve of.

Your mother sent a card. It has a robin on it and says she hopes the mill is treating you kindly. I did not tell her the mill has your name on the wall board and the foreman has your cap hanging on the hook by the door, because she would only worry that you were getting too comfortable in another woman's town.

Here is the thing I keep coming back to. On Sunday I walked down to the sea wall with the dog and sat where we used to, and I drew a line in the wet sand with a stick, round and round, the way you used to loop your figure eights on the pond ice. It never ends, I thought. That is what you promised me on the boat steps, that the loop would not close. So I wrote love on one side and life on the other, and the tide took the first half before I could finish.

Come home by the fourteenth. I will have the step mended, and I will draw it again for you in the sand if the weather holds.

All my love, always, Ruth
