Dear Ruth,

I have set the kettle on twice now and let it go cold both times, so I am writing instead, which is the only sensible thing a person can do when the house is this quiet. The hens have decided the back step is theirs. Mr Pargeter from the chandlery asked after you, and I said you were somewhere over the Pennines being very brave and very annoying about it.

The parcel came on Tuesday. The brass badge with the wings, polished to a shine you could shave in, is pinned to my cardigan now, where the wool is thinnest. Your mother says it looks like a jumble-sale brooch. I told her it looks like what it is, a thing I am allowed to be proud of. The star you sent is in the drawer with the good buttons. Five points, you said, for the five of us still bickering over Sunday lunch.

Come home in one piece, and bring the lopsided heart you drew on the back of the envelope. I have propped it against the teapot so the whole kitchen can see it. The vicar says love is patient. I say it is also terribly unreasonable about post times.

Yours, always and then some, Nell
