Infinity symbol with stars and a crescent moon

Other · Colour · Photo

A figure-eight infinity symbol is built from outlined five-pointed stars of varying sizes, with a crescent moon at the left loop. Soft blue shading sits behind the stars and along the moon, with black linework defining the outlines. The design is centred on a plain, lightly lit area of skin.

Shift your feet off that cold step, love, and listen, because I'll only tell it the once before the milk train comes through. Forty years I worked this platform at Carrowmere, and every night at ten past eleven the same thing happened. The down line curved out past the water tower, looped round the back of the cattle pens, and came back in under the same iron bridge it had left by. Nobody built it that way on purpose. The surveyors were drunk, the company said, but my old gaffer swore it was the stars that drew it.

He used to point at the sky over the cutting. Seven lamps of light pinned to the dark like brass studs, and beside them a moon curled thin as a paring. He said the moon was the engine driver and the stars were the carriages, going round and round the same sky without ever reaching the end of it. I thought he was daft. Then one February the signal wires froze, the eleven-ten never came back in, and we stood on that platform until dawn with our lamps lit, waiting for a train that was only out on the loop.

It came in at six, grey and humble, with frost still on its roof. The driver climbed down and said he had seen the stars the whole way round, one after another, like a string of lamps on a rope. I never told him what my gaffer had said. I just put the kettle on and let him think it was ordinary.

So when you ask me where the last train goes, pet, I'll tell you what I always tell the young ones. It goes round the loop, past the moon and the stars, and comes back in under the bridge where it began, with someone waiting on the platform holding a lamp.
