Infinity symbols with heartbeat lines
Back · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching tattoos show an infinity symbol with a jagged heartbeat-style line running through the loop. The upper example sits on tanned skin on the lower back, and the lower example sits on the inner forearm of pale skin with freckles. Both are solid black linework with no shading or colour, set against plain skin and a teal top.

The reunion was held in the Ferrby village hall, where the same trestle tables had been dragged out for every wedding and wake since before the war. Hannah came in late with rain on her coat and went straight past the urn to the window, because Ruth Carrow had always stood there, watching the lane for trouble.

They had made a promise at eleven, scratching a figure of eight into the mill step with a hairpin. Ruth drew the zigzag through the middle and said the loop was only a sleeping snake unless something kept it moving. Hannah said a heart did that. Ruth said hearts were for people who had never been left on the wrong side of the beck. They laughed about it for forty years without once mentioning the flood.
The flood took the footbridge the spring they turned fifteen, and Ruth's brother with it, and the village never quite forgave the river. Afterwards Hannah wrote to her every Sunday, one short line each. Ruth never replied in words. She sent back a drawing of the zigzag, pen pressed so hard the paper went shiny.
Now at the hall Ruth rolled up her sleeve on the bench by the urn, and there it was, the same eight pulled tight with the same broken line running through it. Hannah pushed up her own cuff, which she had not planned to do, and they sat with their arms touching, neither speaking, while the kettle clicked off behind them and the beck kept going under the bridge they had rebuilt in the spring.
