Collage of four fine line infinity tattoos: faith script on a wrist, a quote on an inner wrist, a feather with script on a forearm, and a heart infinity on an ankle.

Infinity tattoos with script, feather and heart

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

This collage shows four tattoos on skin. Three show infinity symbols combined with script wording, one on a wrist that reads faith, one on an inner wrist with a phrase in cursive, and one on a forearm with a feather and the words love and life. The fourth shows a small outlined heart within an infinity symbol on an ankle, with the ink in dark grey, and the other tattoos are mostly dark ink with soft shading.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The booth at the port smells of cold coffee and printer toner, and the officer turns your passport over twice before she looks up. Behind her a poster shows a ferry sliding into harbour under a sky the colour of wet slate. You have rehearsed your reasons all the way from the coach, but she only asks where you are going and whether anyone packed your bag for you. You tell her no. You tell her you did it yourself, the night before, folding Aunt Mireille's letter into the lining of your coat alongside the grey feather she left on the kitchen sill.

The letter has one line you have memorised. Life is a loop, not a line, so come back when it closes. Mireille wrote it in a hand that loops at every capital, as if the pen never wanted to lift. Under it she had drawn two small hearts knotted together, the sort of thing you would doodle in the margins of a school register, and under those she had written tomorrow will be better, underlined twice, as though the ink had argued with her.

The officer reaches for her stamp. It makes a neat round mark, a circle with a dark centre, and she lifts it away slowly, as if checking the impression is clean. She hands back your passport and glances at the coat over your arm. Something in her face softens, the way faces do when they recognise a small, stubborn kindness. Then she nods towards the gate.

Outside, the gulls are tracing wide arcs above the quay. You shift the coat onto your other arm and feel the feather shift against the lining, light as a breath. The ferry horn sounds once, long and low, and you walk towards it without looking back at the booth.
