A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You were still in the top field when the wind swung north, so Mam sent me up with the lantern. I found you on your knees in the frost beside a ewe who had lost interest in her lamb. The little thing lay on the straw like a sack somebody had dropped, its tongue grey, its eyes half open to the dark. You had its ribs cupped in both hands, pressing, easing, pressing again, and you were counting under your breath the way Dad used to, though I doubt you knew you were doing it.

"Inhale," you said, and pressed. "Exhale," and let go. I told you it was gone. You told me to hold my tongue and hold the light steady. The lantern shook, so I bit down on my cold fingers and kept my eyes on your hands, because there was nothing else either of us could do.

Somewhere past the twentieth count the lamb coughed. It was a small wet sound, almost rude, and you laughed out loud, a thing I hadn't heard from you since the funeral. Then it sneezed, shook its head, and tried to stand on legs that would not hold it. You rubbed it with a fistful of straw until steam rose off its back in the lantern light.

We walked down together with the lamb buttoned inside your coat. Your breath went out ahead of you, a long pale line that hung above the hedge and didn't break until you reached the yard gate. Mam had the kettle on. You were already breathing easier than either of us, and I never told you I'd noticed.
