A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

My father taught me letters the way other fathers taught their daughters to bake, with flour on both of us and no patience for mistakes. In the workshop at Oxyrhynchus the light came in sideways through the lattice and lay across the table where he ruled his lines. He would not let me lift the reed between strokes. 'A hand that stops is a hand that thinks,' he said, and he tapped my wrist with the blunt end of the pen until I learned to keep moving.

I was twelve before he let me copy a whole phrase without a break. The first word he wrote each morning was empneo, to breathe in, and I drew it with the reed never leaving the papyrus, the tail of the last letter running out over the margin like a rope thrown from a boat. He read it, grunted, and set his own word beneath mine: ekpneo, the breath going out. Then he went back to the cough that had been sitting in his chest all winter.

After the funeral the house was quiet and the market noise came through the wall instead. I took the two sheets down from the nail where he had hung them, one line above the other, and found I could no longer read them as instructions. They were only his hand, which had not stopped once, not even at the end. I copied them again with the same unbroken pull, so that somewhere in the city there would be a second pair.

I let the reed run off the edge of the sheet and did not lift it. The ink thinned to nothing at the paper's edge, and I breathed out slowly the way he taught me, and kept the line going a little past where the page ended.
