Ink sketch of a cat face with green eyes

Mixed · Flash

A cat's face is drawn front on in loose black ink with sketchy hatching and splatter marks. The eyes are filled with green and yellow-green, the only colour in the piece. The design sits centrally on a plain white sheet, with a black marker lying across the top left corner.

Brother Anselm had spilled the ink again, and the cat was the only one who saw it happen. She sat on the sill above the scriptorium desk with her tail wrapped round her feet and watched him lift the pen, hesitate, and let a black drop fall onto the vellum where the gold leaf was not yet dry.

The abbey kept no cats by rule. Abbot Wulfric had said so himself at chapter, but mice had eaten a whole gathering of the psalter the winter before, so a grey cat came in from the wet fields one November and was not sent away. She had green eyes that held the lamp flame like two small lanterns, and the brothers said she could see the devil's shadow on the wall at vespers. Anselm said she only watched the candles.

Now the spilled ink spread across the page in a crooked star. Anselm groaned and reached for his scraper, but the cat leapt down, pressed one paw into the wet blot, and walked along the margin, leaving neat prints like a small scribe's seal. When Abbot Wulfric came in at prime he found the dark star had become a face, whiskers running off the edge of the parchment.

He did not beat Anselm. He sent for the illuminator from the east cell and told him to paint the eyes green, and so the psalter from that year carries a cat in its margin, looking out at whoever turns the page. The brothers still say the ink never fully dried on her.
