Interlaced heart design sketches in teal and black
Mixed · Flash
Two side-by-side drawings show a heart-like shape made from overlapping oval loops, with a small filled dot near the top of each lobe. The left version uses teal ink with thin black outlines on some loops, while the right version adds black shading to the lower loops. The white background and even spacing make the two variations easy to compare.

The rope had to be laid up before the tide turned, and Tamsin Rowe had only two hours of light left to finish the length. Her husband Joseph had drawn the knot for her on the back of a tally sheet the winter before he sailed: two loops folding into a heart, a bead on each lobe where the strands came up through the lay. "Tie it so it cannot slip," he had said, "and it never will." She had laughed at him then.

Now the ropewalk smelled of tar and wet hemp, and the boy from the chandlery was waiting by his cart with his cap in his hands. She worked the strands the way Joseph had shown her, over and under, the teal yarn she had dyed in the copper pot for the pilot's cutter, and the plain black for the lower loops where the weight would bear. Each oval pulled tight against the next. When the last loop closed she saw she had tied three hearts where she had meant to tie one, one inside the other like nesting bowls.
"Who's it for, Mrs Rowe?" the boy asked, peering at the coil.
"For whoever comes up the harbour steps first," she said. "They'll know which end is theirs."
She pressed a thumb to the wet black tar on the bottom loop. The knot kept its shape under her hand, the way a heart does when it has been pulled from both ends and still has not parted.
