Interlocking loop heart design

Colour · Flash

The image shows a drawn design of several overlapping loops that together form a heart-like shape, with two small white circles near the top. The thin black outlines are softened with teal shading along the lower edges of the loops, which fade into dark navy tips. The design sits centred on a plain off-white background with even framing.

The lock-keeper at Hythe Cut swore the knot on our bow line was older than the lock gates. He was wrong by a decade, but only just. My father tied it the winter the Marigold was launched, a long chain of loops that folded back on themselves until it sat in the timber like a pair of hands holding something small. Nobody on the river ever untied it, because untying it meant admitting the boat was going to be sold.

Mum sold the barge in the spring, when the coal trade had dried up and the cut froze for three weeks. The buyer was a man from Oxford who wanted it for a floating café. He came down the towpath in a long coat, looked at the cabin, and asked me to cast off so he could see her move. I stood on the gunwale with the line in my fist and felt the knot pull tight against my palm.

The water under the hull was the colour of old bottle glass, streaked with teal where the light came through the willows. Dad used to say the loops were there so a boat could never drift too far from whoever tied her. I thought that was rubbish until I looked down and saw the knot had caught on the iron ring and would not give. The buyer tugged, swore, and offered to pay for a saw.

I didn't let him cut it. I climbed onto the bow, worked the first loop loose with my thumbnail, then the second, and the whole thing unwound into my hands like a slow breath. The Marigold drifted a foot from the bank. I kept hold of the rope's end, coiled it over my shoulder, and stepped back onto the towpath with it. The buyer can have the boat. The knot is coming with me.
