The lift in Ashdown House stops again between the seventh and eighth floors, and you are the one who has to climb through the hatch with a torch clamped in your teeth and the cables humming like wasps. Nobody else on the estate knows the shaft the way you do, so the job falls to you, as it always has since your father did it before you.

Halfway up the ladder, the torch catches the back of the inspection door, where someone has drawn in biro a heart with a figure of eight looped through it. It is one unbroken stroke, pressed hard enough to dent the metal. Mrs Okafor told you once that the lads from the fourth floor did it the summer before the block was re-clad, daring each other to lift the pen. Nobody managed it. The line never breaks, and you cannot find where it starts.

You fix the contactor with two fingers and a spanner, and the car drops into place with a clunk that rattles every floor. Walking down the stairs afterwards, you follow the loop with your eyes, past the graffiti, past the bins, past the boy who sells phone cases by the lobby doors. At the bottom you stop and look back up the stairwell, and the curve of the drawing seems to carry on past the landings and out through the concrete.

You take the biro from your top pocket, find the place where the line meets itself, and go round once more, slowly, so that whoever opens that panel next will find two hands in it instead of one.
