Not a painted one, just a pencil line round a palm, the fingers curled in at the middle and the thumb stuck out like someone hailing a cab. I stood in the yard with plaster dust in my hair and knew it straight away. You drew it on the back of the feed bill the spring before Dad went down to the Cardiff boats, and you made me keep still while you went round it with your tongue between your teeth.
