Loop cross with red heart
Mixed · Flash
A cross is drawn in black outline using open, looping strokes that form the upright and crossbar. A glossy red heart with highlights and soft shading sits where the arms meet. The design is centred on a plain white background with no body part visible.

The rope had kinked again, and Dessa Quill knelt on the wet planks of the foredeck, working each loop straight with her thumbs while the Cormorant rolled beneath her like a tired horse. Forty days out of Liverpool and the coils were still stiff with the cold of the Western Approaches. Bosun Harrow had told her a coil laid wrong would hold a man fast, and she had not yet decided whether he meant the rope or the job.

She thought about that while the spray came over the rail in sheets. Her brother had signed on the same ship two voyages back and had not come home from the last one. Nobody had explained it to her properly. The mate had handed her his wages in an envelope and a pocket knife with the blade worn into a crescent. She kept the knife in her boot and did not take it out on watch.
On the third afternoon of the southern swell she found the red glass heart in the bottom of the spare locker, wrapped in a stocking. It was a stopper from a Lisbon chandler's bottle, and the cook had given it to her brother for luck and forgotten to ask for it back. She turned it over in her palm and the light went through it like something molten.
That evening she laid the rope out in the lee of the galley and made the crossing the way her grandmother had taught her to make a fishing knot, the upright loop, then the two arms, then the long tail hanging down. At the place where the arms met she set the glass heart and bound it in, loosely, so the line held it without cinching it shut. When the bosun came forward to inspect her work he looked at it for a long time and said nothing, which from him was approval. At Valparaíso she hung it from the forestay where the lamplight could reach it.
