Overlapping pentagon outlines on a calf
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three overlapping pentagon outlines, each slightly rotated, creating a layered geometric star-like shape. The lines are thin, clean and black, with no shading. The design sits on a lower leg with visible body hair, against a pale background.

Mind the gravel by the gate, it's loose, and sit where the mint won't get crushed under you. Now, you want to hear how Edith Parrow got three pentagons out of one bed of runner beans. I'll tell it, though I've told it wrong at every harvest supper since 1961 and nobody's ever corrected me.

She had a five-sided plot at the bottom of the allotment, the old pig run, and a ball of tarred string Alf had brought home from the dockyard at Chatham. Five pegs for a pentagon, she said, and you can't cheat the corners. But every time she set the first one, the second came out a hair round, as if the ground wanted turning. So she turned it, a few degrees on, and pegged it with a hammered nail. Then she did the third the same way, until the three outlines lay one over another like a dropped handful of keys.
Nobody planted in the middle. The middle was a small hexagon of bare earth where the lines crossed, and the frost sat there longest. The parish men wanted it dug over for a bench. Edith wouldn't have it. She said that shape was the only thing in the whole allotment that had been measured twice and agreed both times.
Alf died in the February of '78, and the string stayed wound on the peg by the shed. When they cleared the bed that spring, the three outlines were still there under the couch grass, pale as chalk, and the beans came up exactly where the lines ran. Go on, step inside the middle. It's warmer in there than you'd think.
