Interlocking triangles and ivy on the hand

Botanical · Hand · Mixed · Photo

The left photograph shows a tattoo on the back of a hand, made of two overlapping outlined triangles with a vine of pink-tinted ivy leaves wrapping along the outer edges. The linework is bold and dark, with some grey shading inside the triangles and the leaves given light pink fills. The right panel repeats the same design on a hand in saturated purple, teal and blue tones, which appear to be digitally applied.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ivo Harte had been cutting the rose window for eleven weeks when the foreman told him to stop fighting the ivy. It had come up from the churchyard wall in the spring, found the scaffold boards, then the sill, and now it ran in a green rope along the north face of the tracery where two triangles crossed. Ivo had spent his mornings with a chisel and a stiff brush, scraping it back until his knuckles bled from the lime. Every night the leaves were back.

"Stone doesn't mind being climbed," Mr Dacre said, leaning on the hoarding with his flask. "It's the roots that crack it. Ivy only wants somewhere to put its hands."

Ivo didn't believe him. He cut the first triangle true, then the second, so their points met and their edges crossed in a hard six-pointed star inside the arch, the lines so fine he could see the grain go slack at the joints. He wanted it to look ruled and steady, the work of a man who never hurried. The ivy ignored all of it.

On the last Friday before the scaffold came down, he found he had left a notch where the vine crossed the lower edge of the inner triangle. He could have cut it out. Instead he sat on an upturned bucket and watched a leaf push into the gap, pale on its underside, its stem threaded through the stone as neatly as a stitch. Dacre came round with the van keys and stopped beside him.

"Leave it," Dacre said. "Somebody will want to see that in a hundred years."
