Triangle cluster and line square on forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The upper photo shows three solid black triangles arranged in a loose cluster on the inside of a light-skinned forearm, with a plain grey background. The lower photo shows a small thin-line geometric figure, a square with stepped lines extending from it, on skin with visible freckles. Both tattoos use black ink only, with crisp edges and plenty of open skin around them.

Mind the chalk on the boards, that's where the Tuesday girls mark their feet. Right, you've all paid your sixpence, so sit yourselves down on the bench under the clock and let me tell you about the Triangle Reel, which nobody has danced since the hall flooded in fifty-two.

There were three sisters from Hebden who came to the hall every Saturday in a green van that had no reverse gear. Their names were Ada, Mab and Lil, and they danced only with each other, because the men of the valley had long ago learned that three women moving as one were impossible to cut in. They would stand at three corners of the floor, pointing down, and step in toward the middle until their toes met. Then they'd spin out again, each one leaving a little triangle of quiet behind her.

The square came later. Old Harold Pell swore he saw it on the boards, a box drawn in tallow, with a stepped path running off it toward the door, and every dancer who crossed it went home with a different tune in their head. Nobody could say who drew it. Mab said it was the bandstand's ghost, and Lil said it was the step to the coal cellar, and Ada said nothing at all, only laughed and tapped her heel on the first corner.

Ada's the one I want you to watch, because on the last night of the dance she stepped off the floor, down the stepped line, and out through the side door onto the wet cobbles. The three triangles stayed where they were, pointing at nothing. Go on, have a look at the chalk. They're still there.
