Small black pillar tattoo on a finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a vertical pillar-like object with a rounded top and a stepped base sits on the side of a finger. The left panel shows it in daylight with simple, dark linework and light grey shading, while the right panel under ultraviolet light shows it glowing blue, suggesting UV-reactive ink. The composition is a split view of the same finger against a plain, slightly out-of-focus background.

In the wet market at Hallow Cross the stallholders kept their lamps low so the rain would not show them up. Old Marta Oyelaran sold lamp oil and candle ends from a trestle under a tarpaulin that drummed all day. She kept one thing nobody else had, a stone pillar no taller than a thumb, with a rounded cap and three steps at its foot. Her grandmother had carried it across the sea in a pocket, she said, and it had never once been wet.

Buyers came to haggle over it and went away with nothing. A boy named Tobias Fenn, who swept the gutters for coppers, asked what the pillar held up. Marta said it held up the sky over one street only, the street where the rain never fell, and the way to find that street was to hold the pillar against the dark. The boy laughed, and then he stopped laughing, because when he carried it into the shelter of the covered arcade and pressed it to the lamp, a blue line ran up through its stone like a stream under ice.
After that the stallholders found they could read the market by it. Pale blue lines ran along the cobbles where the gutters had been, and under that light the puddles turned to glass. Marta watched from her tarpaulin and said nothing, which was how she had always taught.
On the last night of the market the boy brought the pillar back to her, warm from his hand. Where is the street, he asked. She pointed at the gutter running past her boots, glowing faintly, and it ran off into the dark toward the river, dry all the way.
