The winch on the Halcyon Rose jams for the third time before the tide turns, and you are the one kneeling on the wet deck with a spanner in your teeth while the skipper swears at you from the wheelhouse. Your fingers have gone white with cold. The other lads have found reasons to be busy at the far rail, so it falls to you, as it always does when the boat is older than everyone aboard.

Last winter, when she lay up in Hull for a fortnight, you spent your spare cash on a tin of red enamel and a pot of gold that never quite matched the shine of the real thing. You painted a figure on the inside of the hatch cover, a man in a suit of armour with a round light glowing in his raised palm, because your nephew had asked whether the boat could fly. It could not. The skipper saw it, looked at it for a long moment, and said nothing at all, which from him was as good as a medal.

Now the drum shudders, groans, and turns. The cable runs clean, the net comes up heavy and silver, and the catch spills across the deck in a slithering tide of cod and haddock. You wipe your hands on your trousers and glance up at the hatch. In the first grey light the blue of the painted palm catches the wet, and for a moment the whole boat seems to glow with it.

The skipper leans out of the wheelhouse and lifts one hand from the wheel. You lift yours back.
