Captain America portrait on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A head-and-shoulders portrait of Captain America, wearing his blue cowl with a white star, is tattooed on the outer forearm and turned slightly to the left. The shading is smooth and painterly, with soft highlights on the cowl and face, and a loose splash of teal and green behind the head. The shield's red and white stripes run down the lower part of the design, and a white star sits at the bottom left.

Corporal Iris Hale had been told the castle was empty, which was why she had been sent to check it. Rain came through the roofless hall and pooled on the flagstones where a banner had once hung. Above an arrow slit, someone had painted a star in faded white, the paint blistered by two winters.

The shield lay in the chapel under a fall of masonry, its red rings dulled to rust-brown, the white star at its centre still bright where the rain had not reached. She lifted it. It weighed less than she expected, and the strap had been replaced with harness leather, neatly stitched by someone who knew how. Tucked beneath it was a folded note in a looping hand: "Hold the north wall until the lamps come back. If you are reading this, they have."
She thought of the village below, the one that had gone dark in March, and of the men who had kept watch up here with nothing but this and a shrug. She climbed to the north parapet with the shield on her arm. Beyond the ridge, a green glow lifted over the trees, the colour of sea glass, and then the lamps of the valley came on one after another, as if counting themselves.
She never learned who had left the shield. She only knew the strap fit her arm, and that the star sat exactly where a person could find it in the dark.
