The 4.12 to Oban has been cancelled again, so I am writing this on the bench under the departures board with my knees against my holdall. The porter says the line won't open until Friday, and the tea woman has sold four cups to a man who keeps asking the same question about Mallaig.
You will say I should have gone straight home, but I keep thinking about what Grandda said the last time we sat on the pier at Kinloch. He said an island is only a place you can leave, and the sea makes sure you always remember which side you left it from. I laughed at him. I'm not laughing now. He used to draw on the back of my hand with a biro, a heart with pines standing inside it, so I'd know where I came from when the mainland got too loud.
The ticket office has a notice for a sailing to Eilean Dubh tomorrow at seven, weather permitting, and a clerk who promised to ring the boatman for me. I've bought a return, though I'm not sure yet which half I'll use. I've enclosed the old timetable I was keeping for you, the one with the pine trees printed in the corner. If the train comes on Friday, come and meet it. If it doesn't, I'll be on the first boat, and you can tell everyone I finally went home.
