Twin heart tattoos with pine trees
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two heart-shaped outlines sit one above the other on a leg, each containing a shaded pine tree silhouette. The bold black outlines are clean, while the trees use loose, hatched shading in black ink. The ink is black and grey, set against plain skin and a light textured cloth in the background.

She crosses with two paper cups of squash and hands you one without looking at you. You have danced with her four times tonight, and each time the fiddler slowed the reel down so you could both pretend it was an accident. "The bus leaves at seven," she says. "Mam says I'm to take the good coat, not the one with the tear."
You remember the summer you were twelve, the two of you with a penknife behind the cairn, carving a heart into the bark of the tallest pine, then a second one below it because she said the first was lonely. The sap ran out of the cuts like tears, and you swore that meant the tree approved.
"I'll be back for the harvest," she says. "You'll still be here, won't you?" You look at the smudged biro hearts she has drawn on the back of her hand, and you say yes, because it is true for now. Outside, the pines hold their dark shapes against the late light, unchanged, and somewhere a dog barks at the empty road.
