Jack and Sally in a heart frame on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo depicts the animated characters Jack Skellington and Sally seated together inside an ornate heart-shaped frame. A spiderweb fills the background, and red roses with green leaves sit at the top and bottom of the frame. The linework is bold with smooth shading on the faces and frame, and the palette uses rich reds, greens, yellows and blues against the pale skin of the thigh.

The Bone Man came up the Ashwater road the week the last grid failed, his striped coat buttoned to the chin and a grey spider riding his shoulder like a brooch. Nobody in Quarry Hollow had seen a skeleton walking before, but Sallow Greave, the stitched girl who kept the mill, had read enough salvaged books to know good manners. She offered him bread. He said bread was for the living, and asked whether she had any roses.

Sallow did not, not in the Hollow, where the greenhouses had cracked in the first heat. But she knew a red rose grew in the old stadium car park past the tide wall, stubborn and thorned, pushing up through a sheet of rusted pylon steel. The Bone Man said that would do. They walked for three days, sleeping under a shelf of concrete while spiders strung silver lattice across the gap, a web shaped like a heart's frame. Each morning he cut a rose with his bare fingers, which did not bleed, and tucked it into her collar.

On the fourth day they reached the car park and found the rose already dead, its stems black and brittle as wire. The Bone Man knelt and looked at it for a long while. Then he let the spider down from his shoulder, let it spin a web across the rusted gap, and hummed a tune with no tune in it. By dusk the threads had caught the last of the light and bent it red.

Sallow walked home alone with a cutting pinned inside her coat, and planted it against the mill wall, where it grew into a thorny hedge the whole Hollow learned to tend. People say the Bone Man still comes at the first frost to sit beneath it with her. He does not speak. He shows her the web, she shows him the new bud, and between them they agree that is wedding enough for anybody.
