The candy corn biscuits had cooled too fast again, and Nell Harcombe was easing them off the tray with a palette knife when the back door rattled. It was ten past four. Nobody delivered flour at ten past four.

Outside, the wind pushed a plastic pumpkin across the yard. Her gran's rag doll, Button, sat on the proving shelf where Nell had put her years ago, her stitched grin dusted with flour. Gran had sewn her from an orange frock and two shirt buttons, and had once said a doll on a shelf keeps an eye on the dough. Nell had never believed it, but she had never moved her either.

The knocking came again. She opened the door to find Dev Ahmed from the chip shop on the step, holding a carved pumpkin with a candle guttering inside. "Left this on our bins," he said. "Figured you'd want it before the lorries come." The grin on it was crooked, and someone had tucked a single candy corn into the stalk. Half the town must have been up all night making things for the Saturday fair.

Nell carried the lantern in and set it beside Button. Together they watched the harbour go from black to grey while the first loaves went into the oven. She pressed one last candy corn into the top of the final tray, then went back to work as the window turned pale.
