Jagged mountain ridge line tattoo on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous line forms a jagged outline of peaks that rise and fall across the skin, resembling a mountain ridge or skyline. The linework is thin and even, rendered in dark ink against pale skin. The tattoo sits in the centre of the frame, with a grey knitted sleeve at the top edge and a white fabric background.

The surveyor came up the valley road in October with a case of brass instruments and a clerk who complained about the rain. Nobody in Scarrow Dale had asked for a map. They had their sheep, their peat, and the ridge that stood over everything, and that was map enough for anyone born under it.

Hanne, who kept the inn's ledger, took the job of showing him the way up. She told him the ridge had a shape you could only learn by walking it with your eyes half shut, and that a true line of it had to be drawn in one go, pen never lifted, or the mountain would know you had cheated. The clerk laughed. The surveyor did not. He handed her a stub of charcoal and a sheet of good paper and said, begin where the cloud is.
She began at the west crag where the goats wouldn't go, and followed each notch down to the saddle, up over the three teeth above the mill, and down again to the boundary stone where the old wall gave up. It took the whole afternoon. Her wrist ached and the charcoal went to nothing in her fingers. At the end the line came back round to where it started, though it hadn't meant to.
The surveyor rolled the paper carefully and paid her in coins that smelt of the coast. Years later the inn's sign was painted with that single unbroken edge, and nobody in the dale argued about where the ridge began again, because the line had already decided.
