The customs officer at Hollin Pass has read my passport three times now, holding it under the strip light as if the photograph might confess something. I keep still so he can see I am in no hurry. In my coat pocket is the letter I wrote to Anouk on the bus from Lyon, the paper gone soft from being folded and unfolded.

She taught me that the French for it is shorter than the English, that you can say it in the dark without anyone needing to look at you. Je t'aime. I wrote it across the top of the page, and the last word ran on into a long thin line because the pen would not stop when I wanted it to. She used to tease me that I could never finish a sentence I meant.
The officer asks the purpose of my visit. I tell him the truth, which is not a thing I have ever said at a desk: I am carrying a letter to a woman who does not know I am coming. He stamps the page without looking up, then looks up. Does she know you're here? No. He hands back the passport and says the queue on the far side is shorter this time of day.
I walk through the gate with the letter in my hand, the swash of that last word reaching toward the edge of the paper like a hand reaching for a sleeve. On the other side a woman is standing under the station clock with an umbrella she has not opened. I do not read the letter to her. I simply hold it out, and she reads the first line, and the rest of the page is already in her face.
