Script "James 1:2" tattoo on the neck

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A close, dimly lit black and white photograph shows a small script tattoo reading "James 1:2" on the skin at the base of the neck. A hand with fingers pushed into dark, loose hair sits above and to the right of the tattoo. The fine, dark ink and soft focus give the image a moody, shallow-depth-of-field composition.

The bass player went down the pit in March and never came back up to play, so on Saturday the Palais opened with a hole where the low notes should be. Mr Tulley stood in the wings turning his hat in his hands, looking at me as if I might conjure a man out of the cloakroom. I didn't. "Count it all joy," she had written, "when you meet trials of various kinds." She had underlined joy twice, as if she'd been arguing with someone when she wrote it, which she usually was. She sewed hems for the whole street and said the verse was about seams, not heaven. You can't get a seam to hold without the pulling, she told me, and I thought she was only talking about thread.

I played the bass line with my left hand, thin and wrong in the high register, and the floor just stood there, couples holding each other like they'd forgotten the steps. Then a girl in a green frock began stamping the beat with her heels on the sprung boards. Someone clapped on the two and four. Boots joined in, then shoes, then the cloakroom attendant banging a tray, until the chandeliers chimed like a dropped tray of glasses and the whole room was thudding under my fingers.

At the end of the night Mr Tulley counted the takings in the office and found me still at the piano. He mouthed the word joy at me, puzzled, as though it were a sum that didn't add up, and then he laughed and handed me the bass player's wage anyway.
