Mrs Dorothea Penhale had sewn the big top's canvas for thirty-one winters, and on the last Saturday of the Lark and Lantern season she was still on her knees in the sawdust with a needle between her teeth when the flyer called down from the rigging. "Dot, the net's gone soft at the north anchor. Tell me it'll hold."

She didn't tell him it would hold. She climbed the ladder with her tin of waxed thread, her knees complaining at every rung, and found the rope frayed where the damp had got into it over the wet fortnight in Swindon. Below, the ring was half empty. The Carlisle crowd had gone home early because the rain had come in sideways, and the brass band had been reduced to a tuba player and a boy with a triangle.

Tomas hung upside down by his knees, arms loose, the way he always did when he was frightened and wanted the world to think he wasn't. "My hands are shaking," he said. "Every time I look at the drop."

"Then don't look at the drop," she said, knotting the splice. "Look at the knot. Look at the thread. Breathe out slow, the way you do when you're stitching a hem and can't be bothered to swear." He laughed, and the laugh shook the rigging, and she waited for it to settle before she pulled the last stitch tight. The net held through the final act and the three curtain calls, and through the long quiet afterwards when the lamps went out one by one. Dot sat alone on the bottom rung of the ladder in the dark, the smell of rain and elephant all around her, and breathed out slowly, the way she had told him to.
