Just breathe script lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows the words just breathe written in flowing black cursive script on a plain white background. The letters have a brush-like, varied line weight with looped joins and long connecting strokes, and there is no shading. The composition is centred and horizontal, with the text filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer, you lot, and mind the sawdust, because this is the one about Ada Pell and the Friday dance at the Mariner's Rest, back when the floor still bounced under your boots. She was nineteen, she had two left feet and a mother who counted them out loud, and the boy who asked her to the waltz was Tom Garrow, who'd come up from the pits with coal still in the creases of his knuckles.

He held her too tight, the way frightened men do, and she felt his heart going through his shirt like a rabbit's. Halfway round the floor he trod on her hem and she stopped dead, mortified, ready to walk out into the rain. Old Mr Sayle, who played the fiddle and had never once in forty years hurried a tune, leaned over the rail and called out, 'Just breathe, lad. The music will carry you if you let it.'

Tom laughed, a proper laugh, and something loosened in both of them. They went round again, slower this time, her hand light on his shoulder and his feet finding the beat. By the last chorus she had forgotten the mother, the hem and the rain.

Ada married him the following spring. The story goes that the first thing she wrote in her new front-room notebook was those same two words, looped one into the next, written so slowly that the ink barely dried before the page was turned.
