You have been counting the days since Lisbon by the notches scratched into the chart table, and the sea has been the colour of pewter for three of them. Halvorsen, the cook, swears the swell will drop by morning, but he said the same yesterday. You sit on the locker with a stub of pencil and the back of a manifest, trying to write to your sister in Hull without making the voyage sound like a shipwreck.

Dear Nell, you write, and then the pencil stalls. What you want to tell her is small. The albatross that followed the stern past the Azores for two days without once flapping. The second mate who hums hymns he claims not to know. The bunk above yours that creaks like a loose oar every night, so that you have stopped minding. You write just imagine at the top of the page, cross it out, then write it again, because it is the truest thing you have managed so far. Imagine the gulls on the chimney pots, the kettle, the smell of the Humber at low tide.

The captain comes down with his lantern just after the bell and finds you asleep with your cheek on the manifest. He reads the words upside down, says nothing about them, and tells you the wind has gone round to the east. By dawn the sea lies flat as a plate, and the albatross is back, turning slow circles above the mast.

At Gibraltar you fold the letter into an envelope, lick the flap, and hand it to the boy with the mailbag. You do not sign it. You do not need to. She will know the handwriting, and she will know which way the wind was blowing.
