Karma boomerang design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A flat illustration of a black boomerang shape with the word KARMA set across its centre in white, hand-drawn capitals. The body of the boomerang is filled with small white dashes that give a sketchy, textured finish. The design is centred on a plain white background with no shading or colour beyond black and white.

Nell had been told twice to leave her uncle's boomerang in the shed, but the wasps were thick over the windfalls and she wanted them gone. The wood was black and smooth, the word KARMA set across its middle in white capitals that her uncle swore had been there since before she was born. It sailed out over the cider press, bent in the late light, and vanished behind the hedge. She heard the wasps go quiet, then loud again. Her cousin Owen came round the corner with a sack of pears and asked what she had done, and she told him the broken gate at the bottom field was his fault, that he had leaned on it to look at the bees. He was too slow to argue. Owen's dog was already barking at the hedge.
The boomerang came back over the top of the hedge as the sun dropped behind the church tower. It curved down so neatly that it seemed to be looking for her. Nell put up her hands. It struck her palm, hard enough to sting, and dropped into the grass at Owen's feet.
Owen picked it up, turned it over, and looked at her without a word. Then he set the gate right himself, nailing the rail back with a stone, and by the time Uncle Ray came out to the orchard with his lamp, Nell was carrying the sack of pears and telling him the truth before anyone asked.
