Red K and Q heart tattoos on fingers
Hand · Colour · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, with one hand showing a red letter K beside a red heart on a finger and the other showing a red heart above a red letter Q on a finger. The linework is thin and simple, with solid red fills on the hearts and open outlines on the letters. The background is dark fabric, and the red ink stands out clearly against the skin.

Across the ferry bench Tom Varley blew on his tea and watched her hands the way he watched the weather, as if it might change its mind.

They were playing for the chips at the end of the pier, the loser to buy a paper cone of them for the winner while the boat crossed the last grey mile. Tom had taken the first two games by bluffing with a face that could have sold fish. By the third, the wind had got under the deck and the cards kept trying to fly, so they played with their elbows on the table and their knees touching underneath it.
The king of hearts came to Nell in the fourth hand, with the queen of hearts close behind it in the same sweep of luck. She held them both and looked up. Tom had gone quiet. His hand lay face down, and he kept tapping the back of it with one finger, as if counting something the card would not tell him.
She laid the queen down first. Tom turned over a jack of clubs and laughed, a little too loud. Then Nell set the king beside the queen, both of them red as the lamps on the harbour wall, and slid the pair across the table. 'Chips, then,' she said. He went to the galley without arguing, and she kept the king in her pocket until they docked.
