Sit closer, love, the stove's only warm on this side. You'll not have heard how the Harker boy came to Mossgill the winter the beck froze solid. Thomas was the king of the threshing crew, all shoulders and no sense, and the Pryce girl was the queen of the dairy, who could tell a lie from a cow's cough at fifty yards.

They played for nothing that first week, just cards by the lamp in the cart shed while the snow sat on the roof like a sack of flour. Then Thomas wagered his winter wages against her hay-knife, and she laughed so loud the hens woke up. She won three hands out of five. He said the cards were cold and she was the cheat. She said a king who blamed his deck would never see the spring.

On the last night of the year the frost cracked the water trough in two. They were out there with the lantern, breaking ice with a hammer, and neither would let the other go in first. He held out his hand to steady her on the slick step, and she took it, and that was the wager settled, though neither of them ever wrote it down.

Come the thaw, Thomas's knuckles were scarred from the ice and hers from the hay. The cards were still up in the shed rafters where they'd flung them, the king with his red heart and the queen with hers, and nobody ever asked which of them had really lost.
