Letters and hearts on two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are pressed together with the fingers touching, showing small black tattoos on two adjacent fingers. One finger has a serif letter K beside a solid black heart, and the other has a solid black heart beside a thin outlined letter. The linework is fine and the ink is solid black against pale skin, on a plain off-white and beige background.

Nobody at the Anchor believed the queen of hearts had gone missing by accident, least of all Ada Pryce, who had been playing with a short deck since Margate and had never lost a hand to a bad card. Mr Lusk, who kept a king of hearts tucked behind his ear like a pencil, had won four rounds running. The landlady counted coins in a tin that rattled like teeth, rain came sideways past the window, and the candle guttered every time the door opened.

He dealt slowly, the way men deal when they expect to be watched. Ada kept her hands flat on the boards. Her father had taught her that a card player's tells live in the fingers, and that the honest ones keep to themselves. Her own hand held a jack of spades, a two of clubs and a king of hearts she had drawn herself in her father's mapmaking ink, the K crooked, the heart filled in so black it looked wet.
"Ten shillings says you've a queen up that sleeve," she said. Mr Lusk smiled and pushed his coins forward. She turned her wrist over, slowly, and laid her card down. It was a heart, a fat one, and beside it a slim Q with its tail curled under like a sleeping cat. Her father had drawn that Q on every queen in the old packs he mended, and nobody at the table had ever seen the same letter twice.
Mr Lusk looked at the card for a long time. Then he took the king from behind his ear and laid it beside hers, and the two hearts sat together on the wood like a mismatched pair of gloves. "Where did you learn to draw a queen?" he asked. "From the one who lost her," said Ada, and gathered the coins.
