King and queen playing card tattoos on fingers
Hand · Colour · Photo
Two hands are held together, with a red king tattoo showing a letter K and a heart on one finger and a red queen tattoo showing a letter Q and a heart on another finger. The red outlines are simple and even, with flat fill on the hearts and no shading. The dark clothing behind the hands keeps the focus on the red ink, and faded dark script tattoos are partly visible on the fingers of the upper hand.

The gale had kept the relief boat away for three weeks, so Mabel Treloar and old Ennis Carrow had nothing to do but play cribbage on an upturned crate and listen to the lamp turning overhead. The deck had gone soft with damp. Ennis had lost the knave of clubs to the stove in October, and since then every hand had been dealt with a grievance.

On the twenty-second night the wind dropped, and a single card lay on the landing outside the door, face up. It was a king of hearts with the corners curled from salt, the red K and the red heart bright as a wound on the grey board. Mabel knew it was not theirs. Their own king had gone over the side years back, somewhere in the rocks below the slip. She pocketed it anyway and said nothing, because Ennis would have wanted to know who had dropped it, and she preferred not to hear the answer.
Next morning she found the queen. It sat on the bottom rung of the iron ladder, dry as a biscuit, as though someone had climbed up in the dark and set it there with care. She laid the two cards side by side between the teacups. Ennis studied them for a long time, then filled his pipe and said the sea had a habit of returning what it had borrowed, provided you waited long enough and kept the kettle on.
They did not play that evening. They sat with the king and the queen facing one another on the table and watched the beam sweep across the water, the red hearts catching the light every eleven seconds.
