King and queen of hearts on fingers

Hand · Mixed · Photo

Two hands are held together, with small red tattoos of the letters K and Q, each paired with a red heart, on adjacent fingers. The other hand has grey script tattoos across its back and fingers, though the words are not legible. The red ink is bold and simple, and the photo is taken close up against a dark fabric background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferryman of Carrow Reach has been dead nine years, and the crossing has been yours to keep since the bell went quiet, so when the Queen of Hearts comes down to the water with her cards in a silk purse, you already know the price. She does not sit. She stands on the wet planks with the river sliding black behind her and lays the purse on your palm as if it weighed nothing.

Forty years ago, the story goes, the King and Queen of the Low Hearts played a single hand at the Ashgate for the right to the river. Nobody in Carrow remembers the cards falling, only that the King rose from the table with his thumb pressed to his ring finger and said the game was not over. Ever since, the two of them have kept their hearts on the cards and their hands out of the way, and the river has run between them like a rule nobody dares break.

Tonight she wants the last hand. She wants it on the ferry, halfway across, where neither crown holds sway. You agree because the water is high and the boards are rotten and because she has never once asked for anything she did not already own. Out in the current she deals two cards face up across the wet rail, a king and a queen, and says the rules are simple: whoever's card slips into the river first, the other keeps the crossing.

The King arrives on the far bank at dusk, wading out into the shallows without his boots. He reaches the ferry, hooks two fingers round the rope, and lets his knuckles brush hers. The cards hang between them, red as cut fruit, and neither of them lets go. Watching, you understand the game was never about the river. Both cards stay dry. The water takes the rope instead, and the ferry drifts home with its two passengers still holding on.
