The linework is clean and uniform with no shading, and the image is entirely black ink on skin.

"Keep still, or the line will wander," said Callis, dipping the fishbone needle in the lamp black. Teodora laughed and pulled her hand back, so he swore in Greek and began again on the side of her middle finger. Mira sat on an upturned crate beside the dye vats, her own hand flat on her knee, waiting her turn and pretending she did not mind.

The barge for Alexandria left on the morning tide. Teodora was going to her husband's cousin, who kept a stall near the lighthouse and had no daughters to help him count coins. Mira would stay with the vats and the stink of woad and madder. The two of them had agreed, with great seriousness over a jug of sour wine, that there would be no weeping on the quay.

Callis worked slowly. Each prick left a small dark sting, and each one he wiped away with a rag so the outline would show. When Teodora's heart was done he took Mira's hand and set it beside her friend's, then asked for both fingers pressed together. Mira wanted a heart the size of a date stone. Callis gave her one the size of a bean and told her that was all the skin would hold.

Teodora pressed her finger hard against Mira's, so the two hearts touched and the ink on each was still wet. "Now neither of us can say we forgot," she said. Outside, the barge pole knocked against the quay, and the lamp flame bent toward the river as though it wanted to leave too.
